Production Ecology
Fabrics used in Mimi the Sardine products are manufactured in Sweden or Estonia. Our mills are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. This certification requires the ecological impact of production to be rigorously monitored. For instance, all water in the production process of the cloth is fully cleaned before being released back into the environment. Water and energy consumption are regulated. Working conditions in the mills are also regulated under these certifications. Most importantly, to maintain ISO 14001 certification, a company must constantly improve its processes to stay current with advancements in production ecology.
Human Ecology
An extremely important facet of any purchasing decision is the health impact of the product on the individual consumer. Mimi the Sardine uses only acrylic coated cotton fabric that meets Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This standard is essentially a declaration to the consumer that the cloth does not contain residual chemicals and components harmful to their health. There are additional benefits to the environment through compliance, but the emphasis on human health ensures a wider scope of regulation. In contrast, textiles labeled “organic” with no other certification can use unregulated dyes and chemicals during production.
Performance & Disposal Ecology
All Mimi the Sardine products are designed to last. Each item has been carefully crafted with the intent that it will be used, soiled and washed for years after it is bought. The acrylic coating will remain supple, prevent permanent staining, and help keep the dyes brilliant. This durability reinforces the practicality and affordability of the product. Additionally, we use recyclable and minimal packaging to further reduce throwaway waste.
